As cannabis legalization continues to expand across the United States, tribal nations are becoming important players in this growing industry. With sovereign rights to govern their lands, many tribes are not only passing laws to allow recreational or medical cannabis but also launching vertically integrated cannabis operations—including cultivation and retail dispensaries. This shift is reshaping the landscape of cannabis dispensary operations and bookkeeping, particularly for tribal-owned enterprises.
One notable example is the Tulalip Tribes of Washington State. In 2018, the Tulalip opened Remedy Tulalip, a fully operational dispensary situated just 35 miles north of Seattle. While the business shares similarities with other retail cannabis locations, operating on tribal land introduces unique legal, financial, and regulatory considerations—especially when it comes to cannabis compliance, tax structure, and accounting processes.
To provide firsthand insights into these complex dynamics, we’re excited to welcome Jennifer Bontempo of Remedy Tulalip for a special live webinar on Tuesday, December 6th at 10:00am PT.
Jennifer will walk us through the day-to-day operations of a tribally owned dispensary and explain how her team ensures compliance in a constantly evolving regulatory environment. She’ll also highlight the nuances of cannabis dispensary bookkeeping, which differs significantly from that of traditional retail operations due to the IRS Section 280E limitations and the layered sovereignty involved in tribal governance.
Here’s a glimpse at what she’ll cover:
Key lessons learned from operating a cannabis dispensary on tribal land
Understand the unique challenges faced by tribal cannabis operations and how they overcome them to remain successful and compliant.
How cannabis is taxed and reported within tribal jurisdictions
Jennifer will explain how tax obligations differ for dispensaries on tribal land and what that means for bookkeeping systems and financial planning.
Ways cannabis businesses can support tribal economic development
Remedy Tulalip is more than just a dispensary—it’s an economic engine that contributes to tribal health, education, and social programs.

A Bold Vision
“We have built a cannabis retail model that brings the same level of engagement, knowledge, and professionalism that we offer at all our Tulalip properties, and we are also partnering with emerging and affiliated Native American cannabis suppliers to help bring new values and voices to the forefront of this exploding industry.”—Les Parks, former Tulalip Tribes Board Member
Nestled along I-5 between Wal-Mart and Home Depot, in what used to be a bank, you will find us. The Tulalip Tribes’ first cannabis dispensary, the OG if you will.
In August of 2018 we started out with a bold vision to create the most unique and distinguished retail cannabis experience combined with innovative technology. Donned in our checkered bowling-shirt uniforms, headsets on and tablets in hand, we were ready to serve you. We learned soon enough though, that while our business model wanted to be the Jetson’s meets Vegas, it just was impractical and frustrating (If you know, you know).
Fast forward to the present day, the process by which you purchase cannabis from Remedy Tulalip is relatively the same as your standard recreational dispensary in Washington. But, we kept our vision of wanting to create an exceptional and noteworthy retail cannabis experience.
We still continue to partner with emerging and affiliated Native American Cannabis brands, Minority and/or Women-Owned brands, as well as the renowned & most-loved brands throughout our state in combination with striving for excellent customer service and cannabis knowledge to provide our customers the most helpful and pleasant experience.
Whether you want to celebrate, ease the anxiousness of a furry companion, need help sleeping, are looking into the possible benefits of adding CBD and THC into your lifestyle, or almost anything and everything in between, Remedy Tulalip is here for you.
