The $65,000 Accounting Nightmare: The Inventory Controls Breakdown That Put a Cannabis License on Probation

January 28, 2025 at 10 AM PT

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In cannabis, inventory is both a financial asset and a regulated compliance system. This CPE training uses a real enforcement case study to show how missing inventory checks, weak reconciliations, and documentation gaps can escalate into regulatory scrutiny and significant financial impact.
Tanyeka Alexander and Naomi Granger, CPA, MBA, will translate the case into practical accounting controls you can implement immediately, including monthly tie-outs, variance tracking, documentation standards, approval checkpoints for inventory adjustments, and segregation-of-duties considerations across cultivation and post-harvest environments. The goal is to help accountants, operators, and owners strengthen internal controls, improve reporting confidence, and protect margins and licenses.

Learning Objectives

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify inventory control failures that can lead to enforcement outcomes, including missed physical counts, weak reconciliations, and documentation breakdowns.
  • Explain how regulators connect operational lapses to accounting and compliance violations in cannabis.
  • Apply a monthly inventory tie-out workflow that reconciles seed-to-sale inventory to physical counts and documents variance resolution.
  • Implement variance logs, adjustment approval processes, and segregation-of-duties controls to support audit readiness and reduce diversion risk.
